Winfield Brown Returns to St. Mary’s Health System as President
Winfield Brown, FACHE, has returned to Lewiston-Auburn as President of St. Mary’s Health System and Senior Vice President of Covenant Health. Brown is no stranger to this community, having previously served as Executive Director and Vice President of the Sisters of Charity Foundation from 1996 to 2003. During his time at St. Mary’s, Brown directed philanthropic efforts and led community programs that had a lasting impact.
Brown brings more than two decades of leadership experience in healthcare, having held several executive positions, including his recent role as Interim Chief Executive Officer of Mt. Ascutney Hospital & Health Center, part of Dartmouth Health. Known for his strategic and operational leadership, Brown has a strong track record of cultivating teamwork and driving success in financial, quality and service outcomes.
“I am thrilled to be coming back home to St. Mary’s and the Lewiston-Auburn community,” said Brown. “This is where my career in healthcare began, and it’s incredibly meaningful to return to an organization that played such a vital role in launching my career in healthcare leadership. My wife and I are both from Maine, and this opportunity to return to serve the community we love is truly a dream come true.”
Brown’s educational background includes a Master of Healthcare Administration from the University of Minnesota, a Master of Science in Business from Husson University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Bates College, where five generations of his family have matriculated. A Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, Brown also serves on the Board of Directors for the Vermont Hospital Association.
In his new role, Brown plans to engage with staff, physicians, and the community to ensure that St. Mary’s continues its legacy of mission-driven, high-quality care. His immediate priorities include listening to staff across the organization and fostering collaborative efforts with local partners.
Brown replaces Cindy Segar-Miller who has served as interim President for the past 18 months. Segar-Miller will stay connected with St. Mary’s as she moves into a role with the hospital’s parent company, Covenant Health. In her new position, she will be responsible for the strategic direction of the health system and will have oversight of its hospitals.
“I look forward to collaborating with Cindy and building upon the strong foundation she has built here, especially in the area of financial sustainability and resiliency that has been the hallmark of her time at St. Mary’s,” said Brown.
